Context: This was in reference to Zendaya saying that she's a lacto-ovo vegetarian for ethical reasons because she thinks the way animals are killed to produce meat is awful.

"I couldn't believe that's how I'd been getting my meat!" in Zendaya's own words.

Despite this, Zendaya still consumes animal byproducts and even wears animals.

In "pushy veg00n" fashion, I gave my two cents:

Her sentiments are performative and mean nothing because she's not vegan. End of story.

I upset someone for being so dismissive of the sincerity of Zendaya's vegetarian ethics, and they're saying:

Would you prefer her to eat meat? Because if you’re going to attack vegetarians because they aren’t vegan, then they may as well go back to eating meat because of your negativity.

And of course, the screenshot has the, "Again, this is how you kill a movement." for this genius to reiterate her point later.

Shame on vegans for being convicted! "It helps the ones she isn't eating." is referring to me considering vegetarianism materially unhelpful and stating that it serves as a symbolic gesture at best.

By this logic, an omnivore eating a steak instead of a pork chop helps the pig he didn't eat because he chose to eat a cow instead.

I have low expectations for Instagram comments always, but this is insanely braindead even by Instagram standards.

If a vegan saying "Hey, maybe examine your consumption of dairy and eggs if you genuinely care about animal liberation" is enough to convince cheesebreathers to go back to eating meat, then they never gave a damn about the animals, to begin with. How is this so hard to understand?

How is this so hard to understand?

Not understanding requires zero intellectual labor and increases comfort.

Understanding requires persistent effort even though the self-critique it necessitates is uncomfortable.

I don't think this explains everything about this antivegan brainworm, but it covers some of my vegetarian friends and relatives who have it.
