American Psycho is excellent though, if someone walks out of that film thinking Bateman is a cool guy then there's probably not much hope for them

I've lost count of how many times Million Dollar Extreme or other cryptofascist trash cried "satire!" when confronted.

Fox News and Alex Jones both pushed the "it's just entertainment it's not meant to be taken seriously" defense in court, too. :alex-aware:

Again them saying it's satire when it obviously isn't is kind of the exact opposite of the issue I addressed

That didn't stop them, then or now, from using the satire excuse.

There isn't some grand satire arbiter that everyone agrees with that can determine what is certified satire and what is just wearing the label.

That's kind of what I was getting at. The nature of media is such that it's impossible for 100% of the author's intended message to reach 100% of the intended audience, so splitting hairs over signaling isn't very productive. Some people saw the hundreds of thousands killed by Arachnids as acceptable losses and Doogy Howzer showing up in an SS uniform to take the Brain Bug off for Mengele experiments and thought "wow this is so cool literally me :so-true: "

If satire is well-crafted, it will get the point across appropriately. If it doesn't then that's not some severe moral failing. It's more shitty writing than anything else, and piss-poor communication.

              :edgeworth-shrug:

it’s impossible for 100% of the author’s intended message to reach 100% of the intended audience

This is where I start to disagree. Something shouldn't need to be 100% effective to be better advised to lean in that direction compared to "well if anyone gets the wrong message, all bets are off" which may as well be no message at all (which isn't how chud entertainers present their own their chud media, except when confronted by non-chuds). I'd rather 10% of an audience be hopelessly lost than 50%.

it will get the point across appropriately

Even well-crafted satire can miss the mark if the audience is that ignorant. I'm not saying never use satire, but at this point entertainers should be aware of just how dense contemporary audiences can be.
