If you spend any sort of time working around doctors and nurses you'll find a lot of them have got a pretty dark sense humor.
I briefly dated an EMT and I remember her telling me about some car accident victim who pretty much didn't have a top half anymore, but their Spongebob boxers were on full display that the first responders on the scene proceeded to make jokes about during the cleanup.
I once ran AV for a laproscopic surgeons' symposium. I have never been around a higher concentration of "Dr. Frankenstein" energy in my entire life.

Idk if it's due to lack of empathy so much as a coping mechanism for dealing with dark shit. Some people are just assholes though.
