If you boil water to disinfect it, it's better to boil it twice. Boil for 5+ minutes, let it cool back to room temperature, and then boil it again. Allowing it to cool after the first boil will cause spore forming bacteria that survived to germinate and become vulnerable to the second boil.
This obviously won't help with toxic metal contamination and stuff like that
