Anime and manga are such wildly diverse mediums, as diverse as anything else. A lot of the perception of them being uniquely perverse is that the loudest voices talking about them on the English language internet are deeply, distressingly weird people. You just don't hear about all the boring slice of life mangas for adults bc the stereotypical English speaking :libertarian-approaching:'s aren't interested in it. There's so much high quality anime with deep commentary on politics, philosophy, art, culture, life.
