I would gladly put up with a lot of shit to not have to pay 60% of my income to rent

most of it shit I already have to put up with.

while paying 60% of my income to rent.

I remember watching Chernobyl and they all had ample green space around them, so much better than urban sprawl

People genuinely don't know what the Soviet housing blocks were actually like. Like they've literally never even seen a picture of one that wasn't a black and white photo taken in the middle of winter.

Most of them are a few housing buildings built around a central green area where residents can congregate and do social activities. Much less alienating than private yards and fosters good sense of community.

The only way those would be shitty would be if you had an obnoxious asshole neighbor that needs to make the walls and floors rumble with bass all day.

That's more a cultural problem than a structural one, though. If people weren't so assholish in the US, it'd work.

to play devils advocate i spent like half my childhood in one of these and the stairwell was nasty af with flies buzzing around. The apartments themselves were nice tho

Not unusual, spent some time in the poorer districts of Hamburg and Sydney amongst others and "Terrible Stairwell, damp building, nice but small apartments, needs a bit of work but could be really nice." is pretty universal for anything but between 1930 and 1980.
