I now understand the ugliness I heard was part of a current of Christian nationalism fomenting beneath the surface. It had been there all the time. The rope line rant was a mission statement for the disaffected, the overlooked, the frightened. It was also an expression of solidarity with a candidate like Donald Trump who gave a name to a perceived enemy: people who do not look like us or share our beliefs. Immigrants are taking our guns. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. You are not safe in your home. Religious freedom is on the gallows. Vote for me.

For some, just making the suggestion had put their neck on the line. One pastor had recently been fired. Another, who was nearing the end of his career, lamented: Where did I go wrong in my teaching? Am I complicit in this movement? Have I created this monster? I have failed my flock.

I can think of no better illustration of the calamitous force of Christian nationalism than a room full of faith leaders, regret lined deep in their brows, expressing shame and disappointment in those they were called to lead.

tl;dr: Leopardsatemyface.

amazin' to me how trump got so much christian support when the guy and the brand of christianity he represent would have got him labeled as a heretic.

Before I stopped talking to my dad again he revealed to me how he thought Trump was a good Christian man. I quickly reminded him of literally all the shit he's said and done and while he agreed it was bad he simply handwaved it away by saying "he's changed, that was just his bad behavior when he was young!"

This was the same person who talked to me personally about how both political parties are shit and are just serving the interest of the upper class when I was younger and we constantly had fox news on (and I assume he had this conversation with me in private because he knew it was not aligned with my family's political screed).

After he told me god had rbg killed so that trump could take back the presidency via the supreme court I decided to stop talking to him again. The man also abandoned my cat during my parents divorce and was apparently trying to psychologically "break" my mom like a fucking horse to reassert his male dominance over the crumbling family so there was a lot of brainworm there to begin with I guess.

Brother is a white nationalist now, too. Honestly it's frightening seeing the intense amount of reactionary shift
