Beehaw discussing defederating from lemmy.ml
Removed by modBeehaw is the next-largest Lemmy instance after lemmy.ml. They've already defederated themselves from lemmygrad.ml for ~10 months

Federation as a protocol is something that only people who love protocols would love.
Imagine if you will, that your fun little gardening forum syndicated posts from Something Awful and StormFront and it was up to the admin of your gardening forum to constantly deal with it.
Federation was designed by coders who have never interacted with any normal people and are blissfully unaware of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
Problem solved.
Yes but you have to have an admin that is managing federation.
I don't know much about it but the mastodon server I am on, the admin is doing a lot of manual curation of servers that are federated. I don't know the lineage but like for example newsie.social was an instance that was federated and then they started syndicating content from like OANN or whatever and the admin had to deal with that.
It's not as simple as "oh just join a socialist one"
Liz Warren voters when they see a working class doing Playboi Carti posting: "wtf you are a fascist, how dare you ruin my libertarian utopian forum"
Federation is a key aspect to overcoming the network effect. Unless we sieze the monopoly platforms at gunpoint, it is one of the very few things which has made an impact over the past couple decades.
It is certainly not the panacea many people make it out to be, though.
