Beehaw discussing defederating from lemmy.ml
Removed by modBeehaw is the next-largest Lemmy instance after lemmy.ml. They've already defederated themselves from lemmygrad.ml for ~10 months
https://beehaw.org/post/443376
Those beehaw losers defederating from lemmy.ml means the Hexbear agenda to take over lemmy.ml faces no real opposition, no?
The best thing that Hexbear can do is act as the stick to Dessalines' carrot and crucify r/neoliberal type users on sight (and use relative kid gloves with generic libs). That and probably brigade the shit out of minor instances trying to neoliberalize lemmy.
We just don't have a culture for maintaining a larger community. Perhaps we will develop one, but there's no need to plan for something so unlikely so far in advance.
Oh, for people actually in Hexbear, fucking nuke 'em. I just meant for Hexbears over on Lemmy we should play nice with the easygoing libs because honey and vinegar.
I'm thinking of treating it like reddit, roll accounts on there no matter and try to prod people into seeing, eventually get them going over here. The curious ones will bring themselves over since there's no heavy-handed lib censorship issues here nor on lemmygrad.
Yeah, I think the ideal involves eventually recruiting people to here or lemmygrad, but most of the interesting interaction is going to thereby be on lemmy and other sites.
Do these people even acknowledge that there will inevitably be some kind of combat with someone? Do they somehow look the state of the world and think that it's going to just... happen through voting? That the landed professional libs in the US won't turn :frothingfash: and jail them for their labor/organs rather than take the plunge when the gears really start grinding?
And that's assuming they haven't totally automated themselves out of any say in the matter and left it all up to the ruling class.
These are people who think Stalin did a Ukrainian holocaust and the DPRK is literally George Orwell.
The fuck do they mean the messaging Lemmy is designed for is bad. It's literally just reddit with federation. what
They're also saying "Lemmy’s devs are stooges for the CCP", a lot of it is just China bad
Lmao, Lemmy's development is literally funded in part by the :eu-cool:, they should be ecstatic
https://nlnet.nl/project/Lemmy/
This project was funded through the NGI0 Discovery Fund, a fund established by NLnet with financial support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet programme, under the aegis of DG Communications Networks, Content and Technology under grant agreement No 825322.
Liberals position themselves as allies so it is racist to criticize them. :very-intelligent:
But we don't need to federate with them. Just places that are cool.
register to socialist instance that doesn't choose to federate with StormFront and don't have to deal with it again
Problem solved.
Federation was designed by coders who have never interacted with any normal people and are blissfully unaware
Liz Warren voters when they see a working class doing Playboi Carti posting: "wtf you are a fascist, how dare you ruin my libertarian utopian forum"
Federation is a key aspect to overcoming the network effect. Unless we sieze the monopoly platforms at gunpoint, it is one of the very few things which has made an impact over the past couple decades.
It is certainly not the panacea many people make it out to be, though.

Worth pointing out that Lemmygrad was the largest instance until a week ago. Beehaw and lemmy.ml exploded with incoming redditors.
The next explosion will be June 12 when a lot of reddit subs protest the reddit API change by shutting down for 48+ hours. I hope Hexbear is listed on https://join-lemmy.org/instances by then
Yeah... although I'm not sure that the admins here will be ready to launch federation in a week, or the Lemmy devs put a pretty insular and experimental place (from a software perspective, relative to Lemmy mainline) near the top of the list for newcomers.
Lemmy, Lemmygrad, and Beehaw all switched from a user registration page to a registration request form, where new users submit the registration form but they have to answer questions and their account only gets created if a mod determines they provided satisfactory answers.
Lemmygrad's questions, for example:
- Why you would like to join?
- What left tendency would you call yourself? ( Marxist / Marxist-Leninist, etc)
- What is your understanding of gender? Should Marxists support the LGBT community?
- What communities you would most like to participate in, and
- How or why you chose the username you did.
That would be a way to avoid Hexbear having more users than we can handle
One reason why most instances have increased barrier-to-entry was some rightoid spammer who would register accounts on any open-registration & federated instance and spam scat porn on lemmy.ml, basically every day, until all the open ones were defederated form lemmy.ml.
This was about a year ago btw.
I hope Hexbear is listed on https://join-lemmy.org/instances by then
I hope we're not. I think the current situation of open registrations but staying relatively low-key is the long-term healthiest one. It prevents admins having massive capacity headaches overnight and prevents mods from being instantly overworked, but it also keeps the entrance bar low enough where baby-leftist ex-redditors don't say "eh, never mind" on seeing a registration questionnaire.
Lemmygrad was the biggest? Whenever I’ve checked it out it looked even slower than here
Yes*, and also, yes.
Hexbear, if we group it in with Lemmy as a non-federating fork, was by far the biggest, and possibly still is (I haven't run numbers). But if we only considered federated instances, Lemmygrad was the biggest. Here is a rundown from about a year ago.
Lemmy.ml passed us recently. They have >31K registered users now.
That is noteworthy, but it would be nice if we can find a metric which shows activity. For example, the same front-page which lists lemmy.ml as having 31K users also says only 2K active in the last 6 months, I think it's fair to say most are dormant.
Hexbear says "529 Users Online", while lemmy.ml currently says "2K users online", so I'm assuming their measuring the same thing. If that's the case, this rush has boosted them above Hexbear, although there's no knowing if how much they will retain after this month is over.

lemmy.ml will probably pass 4k users when reddit enables the new API pricing on July 1, essentially booting all Apollo users.
I go to check out kbin and the top thread right now is written by a user from Beehaw called "Cloudy88".
These discussions and splits are ops by fascists. Pretty sure it takes like 3 or 4 people to direct a conversation in threads on sites this small.
Not sure what they think they'd be achieving by moving to kbin anyway, it wouldn't affect leftists. It's just a different federating platform with reddit-like features. It literally doesn't matter whether it's a leftist or a liberal developing this shit because the design roadmap is limited in scope to creating a federated copy of reddit. All that really matters is whether one project has a better development pace or not.
What they want is for lemmy as a whole to die in obscurity because they know if it becomes the mastodon to reddit's twitter, lemmy.ml with its commie admins will likely be the primary instance whether anyone wants it to be or not, and they won't be able to censor the tankies there.
tankies often embrace misogyny, homophobia, transphobia
why do communist-run websites and organizations crack down on this shit harder than anyone else does? must be the authoritarianism
We're not like those other Communists, we're the good ones
Is just Absolute Zero Theory. This is "never made it past the preamble of the Manifesto" tier discourse.
I don't even really blame folks who get sucked into this line. They're just me from 20 years ago. Hook them up to a steady diet of Blowback and Pod Damn America, they come around.
If you think some commies can be reactionary, wait til you meet libs!
look at the anti-tankie ""left"" posterboy v**sh, who in addition to being a pro-US imperialist, is also a huge misogynist and loves to say slurs
Extremely telling how they can't even falsely accuse communists of racism.
Defederating from the largest instance seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face. These guys and the Finnish loser instance can just hang out in their own clubhouse and that'll be fine by me, though.
That seems to be what Mastodon is all about, sadly. I thought it was going to be a legit Reddit/Twitter alternative. But it seems they're just little fiefdoms of ban-happy assholes who can't stand it when someone wins an argument with them.
wow a website that somehow picked a name worse than lemmy OR hexbear
They’ve already defederated themselves from lemmygrad.ml for ~10 months
