Colt made them from the 1830s-1850s, but the soldiers who used them hated them, primarily because the design doesn't work well with the then-standard paper cartridges. By the time metal cartridges were economically feasible, internal magazines were being used instead, which were lighter and had fewer moving parts than a revolving cylinder.
