It wasn't that long ago that republicans called democrats "liberals" as an insult, and the left of the democratic party got mad and adopted the "you're damn right I'm a liberal and I'm proud of it" take. And those liberals were still basically centrists. The republicans have moved right since then, and the left has moved left since then while the democratic party ignores and suppresses it.
