If we can operate submarines and aircraft carriers with nuclear, there is no reason why container ships and other cargo ships can't be nuclear powered. We could decarbonize the seas very effectively. It's not done simply because it is more profitable to use oil. porky-happy

Given the shoddy oversight of the shipping industry I'm not sure I'd trust some of the most unscrupulous capitalists with operating and maintaining nuclear vessels.

Capitalism and nuclear ships is a real bad combination, seems like most commercial transport ships are already half falling apart.

AFAIK running barely functional ships until they absolutely die is pretty normal for a lot of shipping firms.

You can strap modern wind sails on em too, bring back the age of sail. Why not, there's plenty of wind. Could mix wind, solar, nuclear.

Capitalism is a good reason not to use nuke power bc they'd run the ships the same way they currently run ships using bunker fuel.

Trying to imagine Season 2 of The Wire with the added threat of nuclear radiation.

Okay but have you considered what would happen if a us navy ship bridge crew fell asleep in front of the cargo ship????

I think portable nuclear generators are really bad in terms of wattage output, especially measured by weight. I might be wrong though. Their main draw is their ability to run for decades without needing to refuel. So, total energy to a charge is very good for portable nuclear but energy output per second isn't sufficient to move that much mass around quickly, or possibly even enough to beat the wind.

They don't share any details but I have to think that nuclear attack submarines have the ability to accelerate at some reasonable rate in order to be combat capable

If we can operate submarines and aircraft carriers with nuclear,

submarines and aircraft carriers are not operated (directly) for profit (contrast with oceangate)

What's the point? The point of nuclear reactors on marine vessels is to never have to refill. That isn't a concern on merchant ships at all. (Merchant ships ferrying cargo from port to port always have opportunity to refill.)
