      If you can swing it, pick up a few kettlebells. If you can only have one fitness tool in your home, I'd recommend a few bells. You can do basically anything you can do with dumbbells, including rows, plus a lot of bell specific movements like the snatch, high pull, swing and a few others that will also blow up your back.

      Bags of sand or jugs of water have always, to my knowledge, been the cheapest alternative to weights. With those you could do bent over rows. I think access to a pool for upper body cardio would sooner be available to someone who doesn't have a row machine. Otherwise you'd need to start getting creative (build your own pulley system)
