I think it's a piece of empty ammunition belt falling out of the gun, and it's slightly in front of his shin. The PK series use non-disintegrating metal belts, unlike most other modern machine guns, and they come in 25-round long sections (which you can then link to one another to create longer belts), so I guess this is one of those short sections getting spat out.
