I was a long time lurker of r/cth and it was the only sane place I could go on Reddit to read shit that wasn’t saturated with racist memes about where I was born (China). Like I don’t even live there and haven’t for decades but fuck me is it wearying to see sOCiAl CrEDIt SCorE jokes on every fucking thread. Anyway I’m done with Reddit and was hanging around general lemmy instances and found y’all through the federation noise. I guess this post was kind of pointless but I’m just happy this community is still around.

Love & peace x

It is more convenient… until you get your covid passport app yellow coded because the government knows you booked a train (that you never even took) to a city where there were 2 recorded cases (out of a population of 5 million), and you can’t enter any public buildings for a month (real thing that happened to a relative)

I am all for centralisation until I have to like. Actually trust any state

You might be interested in this one Chinese American woman on TikTok, user handle @li2dog. I can’t vouch everything she says since I’m only a casual viewer, but she documented her visit back to China after living in NY. One of her stops was Xinjiang. I don’t think she is particularly leftist but it was interesting to hear the thoughts of an average Chinese person. On the whole, it sounds like China is on the up-and-up in many ways, but it has problems like anywhere else. But the promising thing is their strategy for dealing with problems is more rooted in historical context and materialist theory, compared with the US which only doubles down on its capitalist ideology over time, in spite of obvious issues.

Waiting for the inevitable smack down when someone tells me she’s a hardcore reactionary or something, which is possible, just sharing since it is a small window of insight for someone like me with little ability to peer behind the curtain except through the news.
