In the northeastern US there is a grass like this, but I never learned the name of it.
If no one can identify it within 5 hours you're legally allowed to name it.

it's from my late childhood, early teen years that i remember this
sorrel comes in a lot of different varieties, some of which dont flower. but most of them ive seen more or less match what youre describing. idk

Looks most like red sorrel, but I don't remember it ever having flowered like that.
I don't know, but I remember a long-stemmed flower in california that tasted kinda like lemons when you chewed on the stems. I wonder if they're at all related.
The internet suggested this, but that's an aquatic tuber and not grass.
Lamb's Quarters is edible and arrowhead-shaped, but not particularly sour.
Fun fact: Lamb's Quarters was domesticated by indigenous Americans thousands of years ago, forming part of the domestication regime known as the Eastern Agricultural Complex
Any chance it was water spinach? There's little invasive pockets in NE
Pretty sure it is actually just red sorrel that never flowered due to mowing.
