Just google your state + unclaimed property and you should find a site that tells you how to find and claim your shit. Some states make it easy some its more annoying. The state has to hold it for you and they are just earning interest on its value, so go get it.
Absolutely seconding this. I did it a few years back, and also discovered well over $1000 in lost checks/refunds/pay. Run it for every state you've ever lived in.
