yep, first stage play was 1985. The plot is based on a book from 1910, but the music was all original composition. Same guy who did Cats

Toccata and Fugue in D minor is an old song that this is a cover of, so I guess there's that. I think it also seems old because "Phantom of the Opera" is such an old timey sounding name. I guess if it's based on an old book, maybe they were referencing stuff that was even earlier...
