Aldi left Denmark last year, having been outcompeted by other chains, especially the Norwegian chain Rema 1000 who took over a lot of the stores.

They always had a bad reputation here as being the most lousy of the discounters. They had an image of being dirtier, more run-down and having worse products. That image was not completely deserved, they did have a lot of good stuff at reasonable prices. A lot of the bad image came from their business model of favouring their own generic brands, that often felt very German, which doesn't appeal to the relatively conservative Danish consumers who prefers buying products they know.

Lidl is still here. They have a similar concept but they seem to have better luck adapting. Their stores feels nicer than Aldi's and unlike Aldi who couldn't keep up with the sale prices of their competition, Lidl is often as cheap or cheaper than their competitors.
