I started watching Star Trek Discovery. The vibe of the show thus far is pretty fashy and reactionary. There's always been some good discussion on the nature of the federation and and it's politics and methods, but so far it feels sinister. I've gotten vibes like this from other shows, it's like the underlying ideology is embracing the darkest lines of thought and going with that like it's a good thing.

And they fucking mention Elon Musk, I'm so God damn sick of hearing about that piece of shit. Is nothing sacred? Anyway, Strange New Worlds doesn't give off that vibe, there's more optimism and dreams and holding to noble values.

    Discovery Is the writers trying to make Stark Trek a stupid action movie, partially because Patrick Stewart really wants to stop being typecast as a babyface noble leader guy and that attitude leaks into Star Trek stories he isn't even in.

      He def gets type cast, but does he hold that much sway over the franchise? I feel like he's broken away from that well in Picard, kinda giving off a crotchety old retiree who doesn't want to deal with shit anymore, but gets sucked into things because of emotional attachment.

      I don't mind a bit more action in a Trek series, and actually addressing the Klingon war seems like a fair topic, but you're right on the stupid action movie vibes (black alert lolwut?). And the 'whatever it takes, even amoral black ops things' shtick with the leaders is really off putting. Not too mention that Michael doing a preemptive violent act is framed as the "right" decision.

    The show gets better in season 3, although I still think it's a pretty poorly written show. For example, what is this character's name?

    I assume she must have been referred to by name on the show and I'm bad at remembering names but I still usually know all kinds of characters' names after watching 3 seasons of a show. I probably could not tell you the name of the majority of characters on this show.

    I haven't seen anything after that season 3. The writers have plausible deniability on that Musk bit though.
