You're def right about Mont Klamott. Really enjoyed Der Blaue Planet, No Bomb (the Greenday reminder in this heavy – American Idiot esque) and Katzen bei nacht.
Thanks so much. What's your favourite film from there?
There's a ton of great East German cinema, big shame it doesn't get the appreciation it should.
The most famous (and probably my favorite) is "The Legend of Paul and Paula". Fucking weird movie, basically a romance story with some odd twists and turns. There's one trippy sequence in particular that has stuck with me for years.
"Divided Heaven" is another good one. Basically about a woman who must choose between her boyfriend/the decadence of the West and helping the people of the East (I'm sure you can guess what she chooses).
"Apaches" is interesting if you want to see an East German western. Spoiler: the US are not the good guys.
If you want to see a movie immediately about the war, both "I was 19" and "The Murderers are Among Us" give a good idea about war and post war ideology.
I have a soft spot for "Solo Sunny" because it's about music (and it's also quite good!)
Finally, "Coming Out" if you want to see an East German gay film. Pretty good, too!
Not sure where you can find these. I know some were on Kanopy for a bit, so that might be the best place to start. Look for DEFA films, that's the production company.
