based based basedThe ranks go down to 1-kyu, then count up from 1-dan to 9-dan. it's hard to say what's considered a "high" ranking. someone who has just learned the rules is usually considered around 30-kyu, but can expect to advance through the first 20 ranks in a matter of months with study of theory and regular play. I'm better than most people who know what the game is but worse than most people who show up to the weekly at the local cafe.
in addition, ranking can vary depending on the organization, server, or country. I'm going off my OGS ranking, which is a little higher than that, but which I believe is inflated based on a level of play that I don't think think I could reach currently.
