The Spanish American War. The US had a pseudo-anti-colonial bent where they wanted all those European colonies to be free but only so the US would be free to trade with them. Obviously though, if the US freed theses colonies themselves then they should get to keep those colonies.
The cold war was defined by the US finally achieving that goal and overseeing the dismantlement of all those colonial empires except they had competition from the Communists.
