Well that’s unfortunate, it’s almost like fake sovereignty. In any case this reminds me of an argument I saw recently about this topic: some people say that Canada should become the 51st state for protection against Russia, because apparently Canada is too close and could be harmed? Which is incredibly stupid as I don’t believe Russia has actually ever threatened Canada specifically and has only had issues regarding the North Pole, but even then that hasn’t devolved into violence.

Amusingly Engels predicted this very scenario

Here one sees how necessary the feverish speculative spirit of the Americans is for the rapid development of a new country (if capitalist production is taken as a basis); and in ten years this sleepy Canada will be ripe for annexation — the farmers in Manitoba, etc., will demand it themselves. Besides, the country is half-annexed already socially — hotels, newspapers, advertising, etc., all on the American pattern. And they may tug and resist as much as they like; the economic necessity of an infusion of Yankee blood will have its way and abolish this ridiculous boundary line — and when the time comes, John Bull will say “Amen” to the matter.

This argument ignores all the early warning and defense systems installed in the north. Not like the US isn't the biggest part of NORAD and not like they wouldn't jump to Canada's aid if there were some attack.

Yeah, I honestly believe people forget just how steeped in American security Canada actually is. It does not need to be a state to be “protected”. I do not know where this idea comes from that America would just let Canada be invaded by anyone but them.
