There's an assumption among dem strategists that "the left" is locked in to voting Dem and so they don't need to bother catering to them. After all, they're politically aware enough that they're going to vote, and where else are they going to go? I would generally assume they count "the youth" as part of that bloc that they don't need to put any effort into getting onside.
