“Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there.” ― Gene Roddenberry

Maybe it's just the culmination of nearly too much fucking time on this earth but I have seen literally zero proof that we will ever deserve to span past our current reach. Not that we'll keep this burning rock chugging that long. My current spitball is 'no more than 50 years till we have to figure out how to move humanity underground'.

To be fair, Gene couldn't fathom it either without humanity first going through periods of domination from genetically modified übermenschen and then literal nuclear war with WWII Eastern Front levels of death and destruction.
