Hello users of Hexbear,

I wanted to make this post to inform you that hexbear will be temporarily changing to requiring an application for new users. This will stay in effect until after the upcoming pictrs version, and the development of additional mod tooling.

After many complaints mods may begin removing Yakub memes as well as any explicit comment asking a user to post hog, the difference is that while "post hog" is allowed with extreme prejudice commenting "show us your tiny penis" is not allowed, removals will be subject to moderator discretion.

In addition, we would like to reiterate that Hexbear is a space for all our comrades, even if you may not understand their experience, please refrain from labeling a fellow user a wrecker or troll. Using conditions as a pejorative is not allowed, please engage in good-faith and remember the human!

Finally I wanted to hear the user's thoughts, opinions, comments, and proposals regarding Hexbear's recent federation with other lemmy instances.

There are two mod based proposals that I wish to open voting on:

  1. Should we add sh.itjust.works to the hexbear.net/instances allow-list
  2. Should we remove lemm.ee from the hexbear.net/instances allow-list

    The very short version

    • Yakub is a figure in Nation of Islam mythology derived from the Hebrew patriarch Jacob

    . This was inspired by both NOI beliefs and Hotep beliefs

    • At some point the Chapos found out about the 4Chan meme and began ironically adopting the NOI position in response, referring to white people as Yakubian devils or variations of that

    • It stuck around on Hexbear

    • It's not appropriate for white people to be making jokes about a black religious and political movement

    • The NOI mythology was created during the 1930s when eugenics was a popular concept. It inverts contemporary white "race science", essentially reversing the roles of white people and black people under a similar, religiously influenced psuedoscientific narrative.

    • The NOI call themselves Muslims. Their religious beliefs are a very idiosyncratic mixture of Christian, Muslim, and original beliefs. They were not closely related to Sunni or Shi'a Islam

    • When the founder of the NOI died in 1975 his son and successor disbanded the organization and re-formed it. The new organization went through several names before settling on the American Society of Muslims. The American Society of Muslims rejected most NOI beliefs, becoming much closer to mainstream Sunni Islam

    • After the NOI was disbanded Louis Farrakhan and a splinter group formed a continuation of the NOI. This sect is notorious for it's racial superiority ideology, anti-semitism, homophobia, and generally being reactionary jerks

      Where you you getting that they picked this up from 4Chan? They live(d) in one of the few cities on Earth where you can get yelled at by NOI/Black Israelites in public. They also just follow hotep/ADOS posters like Tariq Nasheed (why Felix always jokes about Buck Breaking).

          I have no problem with the yakub stuff being banned, but I guess I don't really get how calling someone a y***** devil is much different than a non-muslim ironically using the "Haram" meme on our site. I never interpreted either as being derogatory towards POC, but at the same time I will not care at all if they both were banned, especially if POC have specifically asked us to. So yeah maybe I shouldn't have even asked lol, not trying to be difficult I'm just dumb.
