Hello users of Hexbear,

I wanted to make this post to inform you that hexbear will be temporarily changing to requiring an application for new users. This will stay in effect until after the upcoming pictrs version, and the development of additional mod tooling.

After many complaints mods may begin removing Yakub memes as well as any explicit comment asking a user to post hog, the difference is that while "post hog" is allowed with extreme prejudice commenting "show us your tiny penis" is not allowed, removals will be subject to moderator discretion.

In addition, we would like to reiterate that Hexbear is a space for all our comrades, even if you may not understand their experience, please refrain from labeling a fellow user a wrecker or troll. Using conditions as a pejorative is not allowed, please engage in good-faith and remember the human!

Finally I wanted to hear the user's thoughts, opinions, comments, and proposals regarding Hexbear's recent federation with other lemmy instances.

There are two mod based proposals that I wish to open voting on:

  1. Should we add sh.itjust.works to the hexbear.net/instances allow-list
  2. Should we remove lemm.ee from the hexbear.net/instances allow-list

Use dean-frown to vote for removing lemm.ee from the allow-list 11

Use dean-smile to vote for adding sh.itjust.works to the allow-list 111

Use dean-neutral to vote for keeping the allow-list as is (lemm.ee on the list and sh.itjustworks off the list) 60

As always thank you to the moderators and users for making this place amazing!

Votes as of Aliveelectricwire please correct me if my count is wrong.

Of course, it's changed, not all for the better, but that wasn't what I was responding to nor the focus of the original comment... They specifically were complaining about seeing posts from other websites. That part, I maintain, is self inflicted.

    it loads slower

yeah this is likely true, but its pretty tolerable (at least on my devices), but the old code was unmaintainable, the people who wrote most of it sailed off into the sunset, and it was literally tanking the site on a regular basis for months on end with the horrible database optimizations, and that was even with bunker mode limiting it to 2 months of history or whatever it was. Plus god only knows what security flaws were lurking in the ancient version of the lemmy backend we used to run.

    threads are more concentrated

I might be misinterpreting but I'm guessing this is about the "struggle session effect" of the new Active sort? That is my biggest gripe with the site post-modernization for sure, so I agree it's an issue, but the admins say the (few remaining, or is it just one?) devs are working on it, and that the way the old Active sort was implemented isn't easily transferrable to the new lemmy db schema. In the mean time, Hot is working okay for me, even if I still miss the consistency and pace of our old algos (much better time decay).

I do enjoy some of the other changes, and I appreciate the work it took to get us here, even if not every aspect has been an upgrade. If we had more devs and more sysadmins I imagine things would be smoother, but we're doing pretty well with what we've got IMO

i think there have been much better posts in this thread about the issues federation has created, i kinda just fired mine off without thinking about it too terribly much bc i was grumpy

      the old code was unmaintainable

yeah i mean i do understand why this was all done, i am just not enjoying the outcome at all. i don't want to be mistaken, i also appreciate all the effort the people who work on this site put in. i support them doing anything that makes their workload lighter. but the site is functionally unusable in my experience - most posts hang for like 10+ minutes before posting (if they ever do), pages routinely load forever or just crash, and when shit does work it's just a bunch of fucking bigots and shitlibs everywhere! and yes, that can be adjusted somewhat, but it's still changed the site culture significantly in my experience.

idk i don't really want to get too deep into this when it's been said better elsewhere in this thread and this post stands a good chance of getting eaten anyway. i am glad most everyone seems to be having a good time with federation though, even if it's keeping me from enjoying my time here as much.

I'd be pissed too if that was my experience. Nowadays it's almost as quick as the old site for me. What browser/device if you don't mind me asking?

i generally have the issue across devices, i use android/windows with firefox

that said it comes and goes. the past two days things have been a bit better on the posting side, although pages still refuse to load a good deal of the time shrug-outta-hecks it'll clear up eventually, as will the cultural aspect (i hope).
