You could get hiccups in Planescape: Torment, and it literally made your character stagger each time like they were taking damage.
And you're given hiccups as a curse from a mage. If you retaliate by killing the guy then you're stuck with hiccups forever. I love this game.
This is my first time hearing about it. May have to look it up.
Maybe that thing where you drink water wrong and have a long unpleasant coughing fit
