In the same time span, the Tea Party had radically taken over the GOP and completely transformed them. They made huge gains in 2010 and then continued up to 2012 and won even more in 2014 right before Trump rose to the stage and became their leader that they sorely lacked before that.
The Democratic party has historically been a graveyard for social movements and change. Sanders isn't the first one they screwed and he won't be the last. That party has proven time and time again, they have to be dragged, kicking and screaming to move left. They are basically what the Republicans were 20 years ago and that's what they wanted to be.
