Actually nobody has ever agreed on the fundamental purpose of Hexbear, and the goal of pipelining libs/dunking is directly in tension with having a cozy hangout space that is welcoming to marginalized comrades

I'm not saying that it should be one or the other, just that the two conflict

I myself remain conflicted about federation, but I feel like it's a worthwhile experiment that has served as free advertising for Hexbear at the very least

That said, federating with SJW was always a bad idea

More tools will go a long way, but a lot of it seems to comes down to who runs the instance.

If they won't ban people for being shitheads and won't let us agitate then it's not going to work out

I do tend to find most of the people complaining about Hexbear on the rest of Lemmy tend to be the same few accounts over and over again, it does seem like a relatively small number of people are actually bothered by Hexbear and are just trying to poison the well against it. There's only so much that their empty accusations can do though, if people actually critically examine Hexbear they will notice a distinct lack of all the things that the whiners complain about. The whiner's goal is to make sure no one looks in the first place and defederating again will just help them out the most.

Of course, I am incredibly biased here, I like having you guys around, it's much more fun than when it was just the Grad.

Yeah, I liked hexbear more before the libs. The dunking is getting old

The problem isn't the methods, intent or the execution of federating, it's the quality of the people we're engaging with

The fundamental problem is that the vast majority of people on Lemmy are Ledditors with all the Reddit bullshit that comes with it. They're literally just people addicted to the point of using third-party apps, malding that spez took away their third-party apps, and pathetic enough to continue using a shitty Reddit clone to get their updoots fix instead of going to Instagram or something like a normal person.

I was never in favor of federating and I like it even less now that it's led to marginalized members of this community receiving bigoted harassment through DMs.

Ultimately I'll go along with what the majority of the community here decides, but at the very least we apparently need to do something about DM harassment, either by developing the means to restrict messages to other hexbear users, or at the very least the means to turn it off completely.

I have personally never used DMs and the only DMs I recall ever getting were from the old transphobe spam attacks around the start of the site. If I'm not alone in never using DMs, simply letting users turn off DMs could really help.
