HOLY FUCKING SHIT this operating system makes my laptop almost explode. My laptop runs cooler and uses less resources when I am on Linux with Firefox open connected to a VPN AND playing games on PCSX2 Emulator. How fucking bloated can an operating system possibly be? Microsoft really knows what they're doing don't they

Yes, windows is heavier. Yes, it will use more power and resources. It's not intended to conserve resources and run on every system known to humankind. We all know this. How it is a surprise to anyone is beyond me

Microsoft only sells Windows when users buy a new license, which is almost always bundled with an OEM install on new hardware for home users. Convincing home users they need to buy a new computer is really the only way they can profit off Windows for home users, and modern hardware can run 5-10 years before it starts to fail.

I suspect Windows’ bloat creep is a feature, not a bug.

I just rebooted my 10-year-old Optiplex 990 (with a Samsung 860 EVO SSD). Windows 10 22H2 booted to the sign on screen in about 6 seconds. I opened Task Manager immediately, and the CPU calmed down after about another 10 seconds.

    Yes, Fast Startup is disabled.

Probably Windows update running in the background. On laptops it's a particularly garbage experience (fan spins up & runs hot as you say) with no communication until it's "done". If you have deigned not to turn on Windows for a while (tisk tisk) then it might require multiple reboots and a forced fullscreen blue questioning about why you're not using OneDrive and sharing more information (OOBE).

Are they still doing the MoDeRn standby thing where windows update runs when your laptop is "in standby" in your bag?

My approach to handling Windows Update is to use my imagination. You're in an alternative dimension where a medieval super-powerful church-state controls technology. Windows update is a regular procedure required to obtain the necessary computing purity and state that has been deemed appropriate for your status. Those who choose to ford their own lazy path without it risk requiring the penance of reinstallation, or even worse, revocation. An occasional skip of your sessions is tolerated, but if you no longer habitually open your laptop for a few hours each morning then you will develop the symptoms.

God, you made me remember the times when the laptop would automatically wake up from standby in the middle of the night!!! Like, seriously???

(It was the company's pc, so I couldn't just wipe it clean and put linux on it. But eventually I learned how to disable the wake timers so it stopped happening)

When I boot into hdd images of my older Windows installs, it's slapped into a weak VM with the network switched off lol. Very rarely boot it back up on the bare metal it was ripped out from
