Pretty much the title, does anybody know if there is such a thing as a history of internet memes?

I think it would be really cool to learn about how internet memes grew and represented the cultural zeitgeist of their time. Thanks!

i guess knowyourmeme is kinda that, if youre ever curious or confused about a meme go there and it explains the context pretty well.

"...and here we see a typical example of the "surreal meme" movement of the 2010s. The face was a common motif among surrealists for almost three years, along with neon colors and images of Greek architecture."

Man I feel like I could try to cobble together something like this as someone permanently online for over a decade. Interesting to see certain formats of meme (i.e bait and switch/interruption style memes) persist even if the specific form changes (rickrolling became gnoming became stickbugging, etc)

Nothing super like official or whatever, but user @trigomemetry on Instagram does monthly write ups on the popular memes that month and has been doing so since like 2015 I think. He also does a lot of analysis on memes as well

Marx failed to consider meme analysis
