Deep down, the intelligentsia of the Democratic Party know that their lives will be fine with either Biden or Trump in the White House. They only truly lose if Bernie or someone similar gets in power, because then they (a) don't have a Republican to rail against and (b) don't have a job in the Democratic administration.

It's not exactly that they don't care about winning -- it's more that they don't view the consequences of politics as life-and-death, even though for many people they are.
