Yeah when he throws the thinkpad all I can think about is the poor folks trying to limp one of those along for another 3 years despite it being the slowest thing on the planet.
why won't people give up their thinkpads? they're not that good even back during "the good days"
Most Linux distros and FreeBSD worked out of the box on them back when you might otherwise spend weeks getting everything working. These days it's more unusual to find a laptop that that will take a lot of effort than won't, but Thinkpads got a lot of affection for being the laptop that wasn't more trouble than it was worth for a decade or so.
I fucking hate it when youtubers destroy expensive electronics for a bit. Like, just fake it somehow and donate the thing. Having a good personal computer can be life changing to someone who's struggling.

yeah, back then it was a real dicey prospect trying to run linux or bsd on anything that wasn't a big first party manufacturer

You can get an older Thinkpad for $/€ 50 or less, I doubt he hurled an expensive one.
