Yeah, his response was...less than ideal... The reality of farming/animal husbandry under the USSR is one of the reasons we should care deeply about the treatment of animals while working towards the revolution. Very maybe-later-kiddo energy, but it could also be the loss of tone through a text medium

I missed that question in the AMA, his answer is absolutely surreal.

someone who won't make our audience feel attacked for not being able to afford plant-based alternatives

Who the fucking hell is buying meat as a way to save money??!! Has he never checked the price of the food he buys to see which ones are the most expensive?

it's just not as pressing an issue as the liberation of humanity

It's well known that one can only care about one very specific thing at a time, and being against oppression as a whole is too much to ask.

not everyone is able to live that lifestyle

Yeah but 95% of people can very much do that, we aren't that many amazonian indigenous people.

I've lost a lot of appreciation for JT after reading that, that's a lot of bullshit just to say "I don't wanna stop making 'bacon yummy' jokes".

Yeah it felt like I was reading a liberal explain why they can't be vegan, not a principled communist who understand how to analyze topics critically. Honestly would have preferred that question go unanswered than have to read such a disappointing response

I think the original poster of the question might have had him in the defensive, but their ask of having a vegan on to actually examine their beliefs would be incredibly useful. The bit about "not being able to afford alternatives" (ignoring the fact that asking to not talk about veal / whole pigs / etc. is not the same thing as saying no one can ever not be vegan...) shows just how uneducated many non-vegans / vegetarians are in the diet choice. Sure I might get a fake meat burger when I'm out and there isn't an alternative, but I never buy it for home cooking and spend significantly less than when I was eating meat. Lentils, tofu, beans, and vegetables are all cheaper than meat.

If they're willing to have complicated guests on like the Russian correspondent then they should be just as willing to have a vegan.
