Just watch James Cameron's Avatar to understand monism and if you want a good overview of his beliefs read The Dream of Enlightenment. He is an extraordinary thinker and really saw the world differently than every other thinker at the time.

i feel like i have a decent grasp on monism (and align with it), i just haven't read the guy himself. i can't imagine how revolutionary his pantheist ideas must have been at the time

I don't really think it's pantheism, but I could be mistaken. What's fascinating about Spinoza is he was Jewish but belonged to a Jewish sect that was completely removed from traditional Jewish culture which I imagine helped him a lot in coming up with his unique view. If I had a time machine, spinoza would be the lad I go see.
