I've been running this series over on !games@hexbear.net , and I thought I'd bring it over here in some fashion. The end goal of this series is to get a coherent recommendation list from the people who use this site, in case anyone wants that. Not sure if I want this to cover every genre and decade like I'm doing with /c/games, but we'll see how things shake out.
That being said, since it's been about a month let's hear your picks from last year.
I really enjoyed Free I.H. by Illuminati Hotties, I've heard people describe it more as a mixtape than an album but I dunno what the difference is. It's a really fun mix of really upbeat poppy kinda sounds with more punk instrumentals.
God Has Nothing to do With This Leave Him Out of it by Backxwash, is a really interesting album, any Canadians might recognize her as the winner of the Polaris Prize for 2020. Her production style is a really interesting mix of hip-hop, noise, and metal.
I know she gets a lot of coverage already and most people may have heard it but Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers is a great album so it merits a mention. I think it doesn't hit the highs of her first album but it's more interesting instrumentally and more cohesive, some of the songs (Graceland Too) just get me real sad too.
Lastly, Likewise by Frances Quinlan is a pretty good album. I don't think it's as strong as Hop Along's albums but hearing their voice in a more stripped down acoustic setting is a good change of pace. Plus anything where I get to hear France Quinlan screaming is worth listening to for me.
