    The biggest obstacle to this happening is Cuba's electricity grid. This would require a substantial amount, and most of their electrical generation is from oil from Venezuela, so even now their situation is tenuous at best.

    Cuba needs a nuclear reactor to make this feasible. And frankly they should have one. Something like a CANDU reactor would be perfect.

      The Juragua Nuclear Power Plant was a Cuban Nuclear power plant that began construction in 1983, but construction was stopped in 1992 because Gorbachev and Yeltsin.

      The biggest reason why Cuba went through the periodo especial in the 1990s was the fact that due to the loss of soviet economic aid, no oil was being imported into the country and thus there was a fuel shortage for the power plants in the country.
