Uhhh so I'm talking to this girl that I met through some mutual friends and we've been texting and hanging out for a week or so. This is not important information except for the fact that she was hanging out with those mutual friends today and texted me that they were shit talking how "insane I am about politics" and things like that. She wanted to let me know which I respect but I also probably could've gone without the information.

Anyways apparently it was just regarding how "extreme my views are" and that I'm obsessed with them. It boggles my mind and honestly hurts a little bit. I thought these people were my friends and they're here gossiping about me and my passion to change the world for the better. Some of these people are LGBTQ+ and all are supposedly progressive/accepting. You'd think they'd have a little understanding of this shit but I guess not.

I just accepted it and kind of tried to explain that most USians think that way and that it's inherently a privilege to be against radical action. That it's a privilege to be able to whine about having to listen to someone discussing serious things a lot and be able to stick your head in the sand. That people in most of the world have politics forced onto them.

She got it and was just kind of neutral which is fine. Just so annoying to me that I'm surrounded by people that think this way. I'm blacklisted in my community essentially because of my views and am viewed as the unhinged radical. I'm talked about negatively all the time because of my politics and passion for the things I learn about and post online. I'm not a bad person, I don't think. I don't know why I deserve this or why people think like this. I truly feel insane. Am I in a cult? Am I the insane one? Or is my country really this stupid, immature, and sick?

Nah, youre fine. Simply that people think the status quo isnt politic so whatever defies their view as reality is suddenly politics, specially if you live in the US you should be someone who cares about the whole imperialist situation because otherwise you are at the minimum being an accomplice by ignorance and at worst in opposition to defend your priviledges. They are the ones in the cult of capital.

I think we all feel a bit like that from time to time.

Do acknowledge her acknowledgement of you sanity, though. She could have joined in and said nothing.

Taking it by face value, she validates your world view and gives you insight on what other people were thinking of you, which is always great to have.

Any reason not to trust her?

In a liberal society/country,and especially in social circles that are secure in their ability to feed and house themselves for the next few months, yea, it's honestly pretty insane to care about politics as much as people here do

I struggle with this a lot as well. We're not insane but we 100% look insane to everybody else and we are 100% unhinged radical extremists

But we're only viewed this way because your country is that stupid, immature, and sick

Interesting view and I agree. And honestly, can we fully blame those people? Life should be about being comfortable, having enough food en money to do fun stuff with, enjoying your life, friends and family. If you have all of that, why would you bother getting into endless debates, setting up the sixteenth action to save local public transport, whatever?

What helps me with those kind of people is to say that I want everyone to have the same comfort as they do and that to me, the world can be a much better place for so many people, including them even.

This is why I keep my politics close to my chest with most people and speak on it very specifically. Passion has put me in bad situations too many times. I suggest finding Communist friends but also practicing communication of your ideas in a less zealous way. It is hard but is very possible.

Getting flack from friends is tough, especially behind your back. Just curious, do you do any political work outside of posting online?

Just a reminder that most universities have socialist/political activist organisations which you don't need to be a student to join. It's a great place to meet like minded people.

I never really understood people who shit talk their friends in the back. I can understand trashing people you don't like, but your friends? That's always something that made me reconsider the entire friendship. Sometimes they'd do it for the pettiest of reason too.

What's the likelihood of being able to participate in local commie discussions groups IRL? I kinda take it for granted that I live in a somewhat communist friendly area (with it's limits ofc), and having people who you can bounce ideas off of really helps with alienation.

I always say that to focus only on the personal responsibility of the people who act this way is to underestimate the real enemy, the issue is that thinking this way will get them blacklisted and ostracized as well so they are conditioned to avoid, reject and ridicularize this views, so if you have people who disagree with you and are still your friends thats already something, they are not that repelled by it, and the best thing one can do in this situation is first, enjoy what can be enjoyed of the friendship, cause an isolated comrade is a sad comrade, and a happier comrade is much more precious for us as a community(for we care about the well being of you all) and for the future of the revolution. And secondly, as far as your energy(which I do absolutely understand that is often in short supply) allows, to engage in kind and comprehensive conversations when the opportunity arises(such as with the girl you mentioned), and my recommendation is twofold on this subject, one: be prepared, Dessalines is your friend here, and two: since there is and pile, a gigantic pile, of misinformation to fight through I tend to think that clearing up one subject well, may be better than many superficially argued, for those are more easily ignored or “refuted”.

So all in all hope you are well comrades and let's keep up the journey, UNITED!

would a cult tell you to get informed through a scientific theory that liberation billions? You aren't evil for caring, they're sick for not.
