One of the few things I like about Reddit is that there are many genuinely supportive communities for people with mental health concerns. It would be nice to have something similar in a more comradely space.
I'm quite familiar with psychopharmacology and various therapeutic modalities (not to be construed as medical advice), so I'd be happy to help moderate such a community (I'm not sure how the moderator thing works on Lemmy; is it like reddit with community specific mods?). I can share some example posts if interested.
a mental health community would be great but imo it would need pretty thorough moderation. like, i currently engage with a lot of mental health spaces and have moderated them before and i gotta say it can get real bad real fast even in the most supportive communities.
i'd prefer it to not be strictly treatment-related just on the basis that this is an anti-capitalist site and i'd hope we can have nuanced critiques of psychiatry here, but ultimately i think just having a space for mentally ill people to talk about their experiences and vent (within reason) is good. solidarity in mental health struggles has always been one of the most important things for me and destigmatization is necessary on the left just as much as everywhere else.
100% yes plz, even if it doesn't get many upvotes. It's a really obviously important space. The channel on the discord was an incredible space, it was the first place I've ever really spoken openly about my bipolar diagnosis. Turns out shit-tonnes of people have bipolar! Hahaha. Who knew?! :P
Even not a specifically treatment-oriented place, but just a place to come together as people with mental illnesses. The oppressions of capitalism intersects with mental illness is so many ways, support and solidarity and, ya, mutual aid are very important.
I'd be happy to volunteer to mod it, too. :red-fist:
Yes please. The ADHD subreddit was incredibly important to me for education and support that I wasn't getting from professionals. Would love to bring some of that vibe here, especially as I know quite a few of us are neurodiverse and/or have mood disorders.
tbh that's the only reason I still visit reddit. r/ADHD and r/adhdmeme are genuinely supportive communities that have really helped me deal with and better understand my condition (diagnosed with adult ADHD recently).
I would love this type of community, but I'm worried about the potential for it to become a self reinforcing pit like r/depression could be. Perhaps we could include an element of an explicit positivity/support board? I find discussions of mental health go best with copious images of kitties with little hats or scarves.
