Oh my god this is real. They have tons of the things, too. Here is one about evolution.
America is a wild place.
Tom Hanks' character basically develops schizophrenia and starts to identify as his character, though it's not a slasher or anything - the only person he hurts is in self defense. It's a surprisingly empathetic film, with a detective character admonishing the rest of the cast for playing role playing games, but then they all go on to be well adjusted adults except for the one player who tragically has a mental illness, and the climax of the film is them talking him down from committing suicide.
So I read up on it. Apparently the film is loosely based on a true story. There was a kid who was a big DND nerd in college who went missing and the PI his parents hired to find him thought he was trying to organize a LARP for his friends in a cave and got lost.
Turned out really the kid was just unhappy with his life and decided to try and start a new working on some oil field in Wyoming or something. The PI eventually found him but the kid really didn’t want to have contact with his family anymore and the PI decided to respect that and told his family he didn’t know where he was. The kid ended up committing suicide later thought.
Sad story.
No the Chick comic is more extreme. This movie presents it more as a fun game that some people who are kinda mentally unstable to begin with can get way to deep in. Which I suppose is a thing with every somewhat addictive hobby.
Yeah, I doubt anyone has actually ever lost their ability to tell reality from fiction due to DnD. There's definitely people who get deep into the game to the point it starts affecting their real lives, but again that can happen with almost any hobby.
Has anyone seen The ‘Burbs? Another weird Ton Hanks movie, about suburban paranoia and Satanic Panic stuff. Also Carrie Fisher :chefs-kiss:

Yeah this one was actually way more boring than I thought. Wanted to see baby Tom Hanks hallucinating some beholders or some shit.
Still can't wrap my head around the moral panic from D&D back in the 80's. Did no christians even play the game? Yeah it's got wizards and druids, things that are no-no's in their religion but the actual role playing is just innocent shit for nerds.

I miss the time when I was young enough to just naively enjoy channel awesome content.
The vast majority of Spoony's stuff is untainted by any Channel Awesome behind-the-scenes nonsense if it helps, he was mainly his own thing even when he technically was a member of CA.
Come to think of it he was excised from CA for a really creepy tweet that he refused to apologize for, which seems quaint compared to what the others ended up being accused of.
Still is bittersweet watching his stuff though. Some of his reviews, especially his Big Trouble in Little China (Commodore 64) review, were way ahead of their time in terms of what Youtube would become, but all he puts out now are Let's Plays where he's quiet 90% of the time.
I don't think he even does those anymore. Dude seems to be on a decade-long self-destruct

Maybe if you had some friends who were also dnd nerds over and got drunk. Watching it alone (and drunk) I got bored out of my mind. Straight up fell asleep 2/3s of the way through (hence why I’m responding to these comments so late).

Also did you see the Riverdale season inspired by this movie? The Goblins and Gargoyles arc?
Riverdale has a serial killer use a D&D game that makes kids who play it go crazy and kill, as it's a game built to mess with teen minds. This is after the heroin smuggling ring is cracked, and the first serial killer is caught, and after the Jingle Jangle, but also at the same time the organ harvesting cult is happening.
