If women can be railroad workers in Russia, why can’t they fly in space?

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go into space. In 1963, she spent almost three days in space and orbited Earth 48 times in her space capsule, Vostok 6. That was her only trip into space. Tereshkova later toured the world to promote Soviet science and became involved in Soviet politics.

Valentina Vladimirovna "Valya" Tereshkova was born on March 6, 1937, in Maslennikovo, a village near the Volga River about 170 miles (277 kilometers) northeast of Moscow. Her parents worked on a collective farm, and her father was killed during World War II. Valentina left school when she was 16 and worked at a textile factory, but continued her education through correspondence courses

After Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space in 1961, Tereshkova volunteered for the Soviet space program. Although she did not have any experience as a pilot, she was accepted into the program because of her 126 parachute jumps. At the time, cosmonauts had to parachute from their capsules seconds before they hit the ground on returning to Earth.

Tereshkova was chosen to pilot Vostok 6. It was to be a dual mission. Cosmonaut Valeriy Bykovsky launched on Vostok 5 on June 14, 1963. Two days later, Tereshkova launched. The two spacecraft took different orbits and came within 3 miles (5 km) of each other. The cosmonauts exchanged communications.

An error in the spacecraft's automatic navigation software caused the ship to move away from Earth. Tereshkova noticed this and Soviet scientists quickly developed a new landing algorithm. Tereshkova landed safely but received a bruise on her face.

Tereshkova was honored with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. She received the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal. She became a spokesperson for the Soviet Union and while fulfilling this role, she received the United Nations Gold Medal of Peace

I won't give you a guilt trip - I'll merely tell you about myself.

I had a terrible relationship with my mom. She passed away and then it was too late for me to be at least a half-decent, half-good son. When she died - she left me an absurd amount of money. I instantly became a fail son. And I've felt like a turd ever since. A low-tier middle-aged fail son but a fail son nonetheless. Man, does my step-father really hate me.

If the architects of the universe came to me and said I could have 5 minutes with my mom but doing so would destroy the universe and countless millions of highly intelligent species numbering hundreds of trillions of beings - in a heartbeat I'd say "Hold on. I need some time to compose myself." And about 10 seconds later I'd say: "Okay - I'm ready. Do it. Go." Sorry, universe.

I had a terrible relationship with my dad too. He also passed away but in his case I was glad. He was a selfish, thoughtless turd. I was in my 50s at the time so my parents were elderly when they died. If my dad had tried to bribe me - I would have asked for more and more stuff just like I suggested you did. If my mom had done that - I hope I would have been decent enough to say she didn't have to do that because it was long past the time for me to mend the fences.

I was estranged from my dad for most of my adult life. When he passed away - he didn't leave me a cent. I didn't contest the will because my step-mom turned out to be an even worse human being than my father. And that's saying something. I bet she she would have spent tens of thousands of dollars fighting me in court other than just offering me a token sum like $10,000 which I would have accepted. What surprised me is she didn't even give me a cardboard box of stuff from my dad. What a cold-hearted bitch she is. I hope "was" is more accurate but I have no idea about her life.

About my mom - it's very tempting to make myself look better but truth be told I'm mostly to blame.

About my dad - things worked out alright. Because of my mom - I'll never have to worry about money again. I still would have liked to get some of my dad's money. But karmically speaking - fighting my step-mom in court (and fighting her more if she lost the case) would have been a disaster if I lost or even if I won. I guess I'm going to sound like a fortune cookie - but sometimes it's best to throw things in the fire and forget them.

On an even more positive note - the universe is probably entirely safe.
