  • Thanks for posting this, I struggled with finding the right words to explain why the op bothers me so much and your comment made it clear to me. Virgins are not a systemically oppressed group. Incel is a term for a specific ideology but could be used as insult. Using it as insult is mean but that doesn’t make it a slur. The ideology it describes is dangerous and harms women, it is important that the ideology gets called out continuously for the safety of the women that might fall victim to people who subscribe to that ideology.

  • As someone who used to play the ‘women’s’ role in a relationship with a self identified incel, the word incel to me means misogynist in a specific way that manipulates women into dating them. Honestly if the word were to be banned I’d find it a huge shame because every woman should be aware of the term so that they can protect themselves and not take it lightly like I did when they come across someone that self-identifies as one.

  • There’s definitely a why for all mathematics but it’s difficult to find the right explanation for your audience. High school mathematics is often the surface level of a deeper structure that is deemed too complex to teach to high school students. But I think in most countries education books tend to too often give false or no explanations rather than good explanations that are a bit complex.

Every student is different and some people do prefer to memorise derivatives instead of understanding how to derive them. This should be accepted and made possible when the student is not intending to become a mathematician or a scientist. However that does not mean that the deeper explanation should be withhold or ignored. My math books always had blue optional to read boxes of text that would provide answers to the why questions. I think that that is very good for students who need those answers to be able to learn. I still believe it would overall be better for most students if mathematics education was more focused on untangling the entire structure of a domain and maybe covering a bit less subjects rather than staying on the surface while covering more subjects but I don’t know if that’s my own bias speaking.

If you ask the why questions often enough in mathematics you will enter the more philosophical domain of the foundations of mathematics. I wonder if anyone has ever tried incorporating that domain into high school mathematics, it would be fun to teach.

  • Cisness is forced upon most trans people before they realise they’re trans and the prime directive kind of implies that that’s ok while the same in the opposite direction (telling someone they’re trans) is wrong. Nobody should really tell anyone whether they’re trans or cis but in a world where everyone is told they’re cis from the beginning it should be okay to suggest someone may actually be trans.

The whole thing feels like a way to silence trans people into sharing their experiences. If someone says something that you think screams egg due to your own experiences or experiences from someone close to you then you should absolutely be able to say that. Telling someone they’re trans while they insist they’re cis can be pretty disrespectful but that has nothing to do with the prime directive.

Idk if I voiced this right, I’m still practicing on how to communicate my view on this.

  • Kind of depends on how much energy I have. I do some behind the scenes organising (practical planning, financial stuff and connecting people) from my bed whenever there’s anything I can contribute with. This is mostly where I get my energy and joy from. If there’s no work for me I try to get out of bed to do creative things like making banners or signs or decorating my room. Most of my days are spent sleeping, doing chores and resting from doing chores. Very boring and a bit depressing.
