  • Lying is fine yeah.

I'm not even getting interviews at fast food places.

Depending on where you live, they have to pay people over a certain age more. So scummy work like Fast Food will pick a high schooler over you because it's cheaper. It's not about your resume, they do not care.

My advice would be to ignore all the usual bullshit about work that's supposedly easy to find because everyone hears that advice and they get flooded with applications. Try applying for something that's less obvious to look for on a job search website. Lots of bullshit white collar work in the "Administration and Office Support" category that people don't jump immediately for and only requires you to know how to open pdf and use excel where people really aren't looking for much in the way of qualifications. If turning into a mole person glued to a computer isn't your thing there are plenty of more niche physical labor jobs too.

  • Awhile back I wrote about the roller-coaster I was on at work that ended up with almost all my other coworkers being fired but not me. I was the least committed, most time thieving worker and legitimately couldn't think of a sane breakdown where I don't get cut to keep someone else. Now they want me to start new training and I'm on the way up at work. What the fuck?

Don't get me wrong, I work fast enough that I still get the work done. But at the same time I will just fuck off for an hour or two while still on the clock when I feel like it too.

  • This is going to be one of the rambling stories where I obviously just could have jumped to the point, but I want to convey the journey I've been on the last few days.

On Friday, just before our manager was going to clock off, one of my coworkers told her to get fucked. They'd meant to send it in a private chat and had chosen the wrong channel. They deleted it but too slowly, and the boss obviously worked out we were trash talking outside of official channels to each other. The tone was ominous before she left but it was too late in the day for a real response.

We were expecting blowback on Monday, but all was quiet. In the afternoon I realized we were being supervised by someone else despite our manager still being on the clock... at the same time I realized a higher up was typing a long message to our team. I dropped a line to a coworker betting that this was finally the response for Friday. It was wrong!

It was worse. Our company's contract is getting cut down, and this was informing us there would be "staffing changes". As the one new guy on a team of people who had worked there a long time, I knew I was going to get cut so I immediately stopped working and started making preparations. I set up an appointment with my recruiter for this morning and updated my resume. Everyone else just started working harder, when I stopped working at all.

Just before the appointment this morning I decided to log in to our work chat to see if there was any news. All but one of my coworkers had been mailed their marching orders. I checked my email and... nothing. Best guess from my coworkers is I'm not being fired.

I really don't know how to process this. When I was sure I was getting fired this was just kind of funny. I've got a big safety net and didn't take the job too seriously anyway. I'd let my coworkers know I was just going to do the bare minimum until I got the news when I saw them pushing harder for it. Since I learning I was being kept I've just been kind of shell shocked.

Don't get me wrong, I like the gig and didn't want to be fired but jesus reading the chat of everyone else was brutal. These people needed the job.
