  • It's an interesting one, I think a lot of people are used to only having to pick between two sides which is why you see so many people comparing them to the Donald and do many of them acting like anyone who disagrees is an American imperialist... It's just classic left wing unity, if you disagree about anything you're working for them kinda mentally.

R/socialism was a good example, if your options didn't exactly match the mods you'd get banned no matter what - I'm all for highly moderated communities in focused groups but claiming to have the only acceptable opinions on something as vast as socialism then banning any debate isn't right. It's things like that which have split the community so much.

Personally I accept that not everyone has the same opinions and personality as me, I like to try and understand their perspective even if I don't agree. I can see how the opinions of a hex user would shock someone that has been in a bubble that excludes them and I can see why hex culture is like they are... (Aggressive and childish))

I do think things would settle down a lot over time, hopefully they'll learn that shock jokes and discussion blocking just make them look silly, likewise people will get more used to understanding there is no simple one size fits all answer to such complex issues - a lot of people seem to want a simple view of the world, Mao was a baddie and everything he did was bad or Mao was a hero and everything he did was good, the reality is of course a muddle of grey areas and confusion, same with Gandhi, Obama, Bernie, even the old r/socialism mods...

Personally I've always wanted multi layer moderation to allow those of us who want to interact with dissenting opinions to do so but I think that's probably a bit beyond what we're ready to cope with, this fractured community model is a great step towards that though and I hope we get to see an evolution of ideas and methods of debate - posting a picture of a pooping pig isn't going to bring about a glorious revolution, crying that there are other options and locking ourselves in ever smaller boxes isn't praxis, it isn't going to create the unity and understanding needed to win the culture war, it's certainly not going to help create a better world for all.

Yes it's not as comfortable when you have to hear things that don't fit with your world view but maximising comfort isn't really a good strategy for anything, even nap time is better if you do something difficult first.

  • It's funny manual is the standard here so there's no ego boost to driving one, people always tell me it's because we have more corners which has never made any sense (I e. You need to go into second or third at roundabout which I think older autos would have a little lag with or something, certainly not a problem in cars from this century)

I would love an automatic, i think it would make my driving safer in several ways, for a start not having to focus on gears at key moments like navigating road changes and corners or pulling away in a busy carpark. When I drove in the US it was so nice not having to constantly be doing stuff in traffic that I wasn't anywhere near as tired which again is a big safety issue
