  • Honestly, I've never actually tried a dampened/refrigerated cloth. I wouldn't try anything cotton. And I suspect other cloths, eg microfiber etc wouldn't breathe. Hmmmm. Maybe wool ? Cut up an old jumper? idk...

I can say that this thing works as advertised. You don't need to chill it, you wet it, wring it wave it around and it feels cool. Then if it feels warm, you wave it around and it feels cool again. It's like some sort of black magic XD

  • I'm a big fan of fans. DC Fans are very power efficient and can be quieter than other AC fans. They basically help your natural sweating to cool you. This is my main tool for combating the heat.

If it gets really hot, I like Cooling cloths. Basically, you wet them, give them a shake and they feel cool. I look totally hip with it in a do-rag style. Using it with the fan makes it feel like it's been in the fridge.

Again, if it's really hot, I use a Cooling Mat. They only work for an hour or two for me. They absorb your heat, but then act like a radiator lol. I found them good to get off to sleep when it's really hot. Then when I wake up in the middle of the night, I chuck it away. You can also get a bigger one for the rest of your body. It's a bit disturbing that this type of thing is usually used for pets, but meh, I'd rather be a cool cat than a hot dog.

Bedding wise, a woollen mattress protector, and Tencel sheets. Silky, cool feeling. Moisture wicking. I avoid cotton. Cotton will be cool, but becomes useless if you sweat. That's why your sports gear is not cotton.

  • Just realised why I'm a fan of daily threads.

There was something that I thought would be good to share, but it's not worthy of it's own thread. So, I won't bother posting it.

Not the first time it's happened....

Anyways, probably doesn't matter. I think I'm talking to myself and 1 or 2 others at most lol

Going deeper down the rabbit hole:

    • Any app that has access to location, knows where you are right now.
    • It's doesn't have to be a hacker. A dodgy employee of the organisation or a contractor can do the same thing. They don't have to 'hack' anything. Just use their legitimate access for bad purposes.

But if you’re doing it anyway may as well get the free stuff from it.

Counterpoint: By using the app, yet another organisation has your personal details, phone number, email, payment method including possibly credit card details. Do they have your birthday too? That's plenty enough data to attempt identity theft.

The app also tracks all your purchases. Loyalty cards are used to do this too. Looking at your purchases someone could reliably predict what days and times you are buying your coffee. So, they also know when you aren't at home, Thieves would love this information and could plan a little visit to your home to relieve you of some of your valuable items.

Companies make money by capturing your data, using it internally, but also by selling it too. You probably don't know if, what or who they onsell it to.

Finally, as we"ve seen companies' data is constantly hacked (eg Optus). There's little or no penalties for companies not taking good care of your personal information.

This is just off the top of my head. But it's the generic "Reasons why you shouldn't use an app" that are usually ignored. It's ultimately a trade off between security and convenience/cost.

  • Obligatory mention to the incredible Snot block & roll.

It's a website that reviews and rates mainly Sydney, but includes other Aussie and international bakeries vanilla slices and sausage rolls. Any of the high ratings I have tried have been awesome. Try some and it will change your mind and your life. I didn't even eat them until I stumbled across the site and found a couple of bakeries local to me that had been rated 9s. Mind blown!

Tip: you can use the tags to select ratings, eg

    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/slice10/
    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/slice9/
    etc, or

    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/roll9/
    etc

  • Petrol prices jumped about 40c/l yesterday. I snuck out last night at 10:30 and scored some at one of the last cheapies in my area.

Expect we won't see cheaper prices again until late Jan. I'm totally surprised that the prices will be at their highest over Christmas and New Year! What an unlucky coincidence that prices are increasing just when school holidays start too!

Fill up if you can still find a cheapie.
