  • Probably need to understand the policy a bit better. If you get in line for a car but there’s a waiting list from the sudden demand, if you don’t get it until after they remove the policy do you end up missing out? It’s a bit of a gamble.

Yeah, I'm sure there will be a sunset period, but it'll most likely only apply to people who have actually bought a car (i.e. it's been registered in their name). If it's on a boat, it won't count.

They will probably give people a bit of lead time after the announcement though (ideally a couple of months at least). Although given it seems to be mostly ideological, maybe they won't, and sales will drop off a cliff as soon as they confirm it's ending.

  • I agree, I really don't like those designs.

I think the main problem was the obvious alternative was the silver fern (on a black flag). But that was ruled out because the All Blacks wanted to keep making money off it. If someone had managed to make a silver fern design that had avoided trademark issues, it might have gained some momentum.

Plus John Key made it quite political, so it made it hard for people who didn't like him (which was a pretty substantial portion of the population) to support change.

  • I can't help thinking after reading this that HWEN was really a mistake. Fair enough to consult at length with industry, but to effectively let them run the consultation process itself was taking it too far. In the end, the industry exists within the regulatory framework of NZ, and it has to adapt to that.

I really think Labour would have been better off in the long run taking a harder line with the industry (while still showing they are listening), dealing with the blowback, but at least getting something across the line. I guess hindsight is 20/20 though.
