I just read a book about pre-revolution Cuba. It's important to note that the revolution itself wasn't really a communist one. It was an independence movement that became Communist in ideology after they took power. Castro etc weren't ML's from the get go, they just realized that it was the best system to implement the reforms needed. Especially when trying to separate the island from US influence.
