  • I'd love for there the be something in Taupo....

    One reason is also got to be that the Linux crowd got older, has families etc... Life happens, I have 3 boys, shit is busy. Kids are using iOS, Android and Chromebooks...

    The web is just about the OS now, so a good web browser is probably more important than the OS it is running on.

    I have been using Linux since 2008 and full time since 2010, I will never go back to Windows, but I probably use Android more than desktop Linux....

  • I used Ubuntu for years, but the forcing of snap really killed it for me.

    Ubuntu used to be synonymous with stability and compatibility. It was always a little bloated and slower than a bunch of others. But that was the price for stability....

    It is probably still stable but compatibility has taken a back seat. This is what really annoyed me enough to switch.

    I'm on Mint now, it is really nice. Flatpak is much better than Snap, my only real issue is the MASSIVE size of flatpak downloads.

  • I have always felt he comes across as ingenuine, I also think he knows it and at long as he is pandering to the electorate they will keep voting.

    But he knows that he is unpopular, just look at the outcome of the last election, he didn't even know the names of those he was talking into parliament. That is how little he thought of Act's chance of getting that much of the vote.

  • One way to look at this is that cows are a technology.

    The goal is not the tech itself, but what it gives us, in this case milk. Just like any other technology, it will be supplanted when a new, better technology comes along.

    Once a better way of achieving the goal arrives the transition to the new tech will be swift and devastating. Almost no one in the industry will see the change coming until it has already started; at which point it will be far too late. See:

    • Audio tape -> CD -> mp3 player -> phones/streaming
    • film camera -> digital camera -> cellphone camera
    • horse and cart -> truck
    • horse -> car.

    I remember having this conversation with a farmer 10 years ago, looking at the growth of bio-tech and the potential to genetically engineer; say yeast to produce dairy proteins; I knew it would only be a matter of time before the whole dairy industry would collapse.
